about this Blog

After I (more or less) finished my 1966 Volkswagen Fastback the "Volksback", it was time for another challenge, here it is!

New windscreen and seals

The Streaker is now 1 year on the streets. I drove it about 2.500 km and had to sort out a lot of small niggles. After I changed the carb lately it finally runs good. This  summer I bought a new windscreen which I managed to break on the way to the garage...
Just before Christmas I bought a new one from Hoffmann Speedster and this time all went well!
The old screen had so many scratches and some burn marks from grinding and welding. The last owner stored the screen in his workshop and unfortunately, all sorts of stuff splattered on it and burned into the surface.  Now I have a clear view again!

This is the before - even if it is not to be seen, this is the old scratched screen:

The window frame looks still perfect, no signs of rust!

There was only a minor spot in the lower corner of the frame, a stone chip which I sealed against rust:

It looks like the "before" picture, but is so much better - scratch free!

At the same time I exchanged the rear window rubber, as there was still the original 1983 seal with missing chrome strip:

There were some cracks on the old seal and the missing chrome strip made it look sad:

Out with the old:

Same story in the rear, the window surround area is in top shape:

...and the finished article: Result! Now there are new seals all around and - most important: A scratch free wind screen!

Oldtimertreff Neandertal

Even though the weather wasn't perfect, I took the Streaker to the Neandertal near Düsseldorf. There is a classic car meeting each Sunday.
Here are a few highlights, I know, a lot of Porsche, but there were all kinds of vintage iron on site!

1-2-3 Ignition + electrical gremlins

The 1-2-3 Ignition is installed, the engine still didn't run perfect, so I checked the resistance of the ignition wires - Surprise: 1 (brand new) wire was defect!
I changed it and again, it was better but still not perfect. Some tweaking on the carburetor and now it is halfway decent...
The next day I started the Streaker - which is perfect with the 1-2-3 ignition - and after about 2 km I was distracted by this:

Generator / charging light went full on! I exchanged the regulator (without checking anything else) but it didn't help! Later I found out that the brush springs on the generator were a little tired, I cleaned and tuned the brushes and now it works perfect again!

The remedy?

The Streaker still doesn't perform. Some experts told me to check a 123 Ignition - which could cure some of the problems. As soon as the weather warms up a bit, I will install this thing of beauty and check if it works. If not, I can still use it in the Type 3 engine!

I set the dial indicator to the "F" curve - which mimics a Bosch 009 distributor - We will see how this works...

Spark plugs

The new motor still doesn't run perfect. The timing has been adjusted and the carburator, too. I think that the spark plugs are too "cold" for the amount of fuel/air mixture - So I will replace them with these:
 BP6ET - 3 electrodes and a "hotter" spark - I hope this helps...

Annoying rear seat vibration

The rear seat was rattling since day one. The rubber which is usually monted in Mexico-made beetles was missing, resulting in a permanent rattle. During the Rosmalen meeting I found a nice set of rubber straps.

As there appears to be only 1 strap on those cars, I try it with 1 strap also:
Hopefully the rattling will be gone now!

Steering woes

Even though I refurbed the original steering box, there was still too much play, so I ordered a new TRW steering box. I use the same thing in my Type 3 since years without any issues:
This weekend I will install it to have a more precise feeling in the steering wheel!

Rosmalen parts

Ralf and myself made a trip to the Kever Winterfestijn in Rosmalen, Netherland. We met some friends and concentrated on parts hunt. Ralf found a lot of stuff for the Avis beetle, I just collected a few things for the Streaker:
A nice, OE VW Oil filler cap, a switch, a sheet of stickers, 2 beauty rings for the rear view mirrors and a more sturdy aluminum pipe for the heater system. On the far right is a set of rubber straps to fix the upper part of the rear seat properly. It rattles always during driving which drives me nuts!

a hefty receipt...

Today I received the receipt for the TÜV inspection. I understand that a lot of work and time was involved. The receipt reflects this. It almost exactly met my highest expectations...
(€uro this is...)
